Workshop Music & Brain

We are happy to announce that we are working hard on a workshop "Music and Brain" to take place in July in the course of the International Youth Music Festival SCL, organized by Via Musica.

In this workshop Prof. Dr. Tucek (IMC University of Applied Sciences Krems) will conduct a fascinating experiment to demonstrate the power of music and its effect on our psycho-physiology. We will experience how music affects our consciousness and will gain insights into the newest research of music therapy and its findings on the mind.

In a short experiment Prof. Dr. Tucek and his team will wire up a few of the musicians and some of the members of the audience. This will allow them to project electrocardiogram data and work with the data.

After analysing the ECG recordings and based on the findings Prof. Dr. Tucek will explain how music affects the brain and how this knowledge can be used in modern music therapy.

The Vienna Forum is very proud to organize this workshop, given the historical context that Vienna is not only the city of music but with famous protagonists like Sigmund Freud, Alfred Adler and Victor Frankl also an important landmark on the map of psychology.

Commemorating World War I at the Diplomatic Academy Vienna

Together with the Summa cum Laude International Youth Music Festival the Vienna Forum for Educational Exchange organized an event to commemorate the centennial of the First World War. The activity took place at the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna, one of the world’s oldest training facilities. Two Keynote speeches held by Selma Prodanovic and Philipp Blom gave insight into the years before the war, painting a picture of the socio-political as well as the socio-economical history of the tragedy that followed the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, as well as providing the participants with philanthropic inspirations on how to build a better world together.

The musical program was performed by the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra (NBYO) and the Colorado Festival Singers. The NBYO presented the work “A Dream of Dawn” written by the Canadian composer Kevin Lau, who was present at the event. “A Dream of Dawn” was the centerpiece commissioned by the NBYO for their commemoration Tour “Keeping Faith”, marking the centennial of World War I.

“My intention is to compliment the reflections of those pondering war in all its paradoxical facets, to recognize the horrors of human conflict while affirming our profound search for harmony in ourselves and abroad,” described Lau the piece that had been premiered the day before in the golden hall of the Viennese Musikverein.
The large audience, including diplomatic staff from the Canadian and US-american embassies enjoyed an interesting summer evening, with inspiring talks and a delightful musical repertoire.
